AcneFree Review

AcneFree offers several skin care solutions, but their Severe Acne Treatment System is the highest rated of their products. The system is composed of 4 steps: (1) a cleanser with BP, (2) a toner with alcohol, witch hazel and glycerin, (3) a lotion with more BP, and (4) a renewing retinol complex.

The primary factor that sets AcneFree apart is its use of 10% benzoyl peroxide, in contrast to the lower 2.5-5% concentrations used by most competing products. This sounds like it should make AcneFree more effective, right? Well, not really. Studies have shown that while higher concentrations of BP are harsher on your skin, there is no perceivable increase in acne-stopping power above 2.5%.

What does make a difference is applying a more liberal amount of BP, as a thicker layer will have a better chance of penetrating deeper into your skin. AcneFree does help in this regard, as the larger bottles provide more BP, and thus a better value than products such as Proactiv. The particles are also microencapsulated for maximum absorbance over time.

AcneFree at a glance

+

Inexpensive + large bottles = a good value for your money.

+

Provides enough BP to allow for liberal applications, which are effective in most cases of acne.

+

Microencapsulated particles allow for high penetration and longer-lasting effects.

-

10% BP is sure to burn, and offers no benefit above gentler concentrations.

-

Expect a week of dry, flaky, irritated skin before things improve.

-

Results are temporary for many users. Your skin may adapt to the blast of strong chemicals.

-

Like any system with 4 steps, daily use may prove a hassle.

Who should try AcneFree

The AcneFree Severe Acne Treatment System is, as expected, mainly targeted at those suffering from serious cases of acne. That means people with clusters of pustules and cysts. If that's you and your skin can handle or adapt to a strong topical solution, this may do the trick. Note that most users do need an adjustment period. You should go in expecting some initial irritation. If you can endure it, things should improve afterwards.

AcneFree does offer other product lines for those with less severe cases of acne, but even their standard-strength system uses a very strong 7% concentration of BP.

Who should not try AcneFree

If you have sensitive skin or are looking for something that targets more than just the surface-level symptoms of acne, steer clear of AcneFree. The ingredients here can be very harsh, and this is a treatment for current acne, not a preventative solution.

While it's cheap, AcenFree is also hard to recommend over a system such as the Acne.org Regimen, which offers a similar primary benefit (high-dose BP) with a gentler 2.5% concentration instead of AcneFree's harsher 10%.
