Burt's Bees Natural Acne Solutions Review

Burt's Bees has a built a reputation for quality natural products. Their Natural Acne Solutions kit is a 3-step treatment system that is almost 100% composed of organic ingredients. That said, the resulting active ingredient for all three steps (salicylic acid) is still effectively the same chemical that you've seen in dozens of other similar products.

The Burt's Bees system includes a purifying gel cleanser that exfoliates with SA while soothing the skin with evening primrose and beet root extracts. The second step is a daily moisturizing lotion with another dose of SA, along with lemongrass, witch hazel, goldenseal and hops to reduce inflammation. Last is a targeted spot treatment with more SA, tea tree, calendula, yarrow and parsley extracts to reduce redness and borage extract to rejuvenate the skin.

So what makes Burt's Bees different? Well for one thing, the salicylic acid used in their products is derived naturally from willow bark extract, rather than being chemically manufactured. The concentrations used are also noticeably gentler than in most other SA-based treatments. This makes Burt's Bees a good alternative for those with sensitive skin, although it may not be potent enough to combat serious acne.

Who should try Burt's Bees

Burt's Bees Natural Acne Solutions is worth trying if your acne mostly consists of mild whiteheads and blackheads. Its balanced approach of topical exfoliation + skin nourishing botanicals is gentler than most salicylic acid formulations, and those with very sensitive skin will be glad for the lack of benzoyl peroxide. You may have to give it a few weeks, as the ingredients here are not especially potent (don't expect next-day results from the spot treatment), but those with patience who want to avoid irritation may be satisfied with the results.

Who should not try Burt's Bees

Despite the low concentrations of salicylic acid, user reviews still point to some experiencing dryness and inflammation, so if you know that you're sensitive to SA (or you've built up a resistance to it), using Burt's Bees may not be a good idea. The inclusion of SA even in the moisturizing lotion means that your skin may also be left rather susceptible to sun damage. For most with stubborn cases of moderate-to-severe acne, these active ingredients will simply not be enough, as exfoliating your top layer of skin cells may unclog some pores, but it will not prevent deep pustules or cysts from forming.
