Bio-Activating Breakout Control
Review

Own is a
relatively new entry into the acne treatment system market
with some impressive testimonials and before-and-after
photos. Their Bio-Activating Breakout Control line claims to
treat all 4 causes of acne, and is designed to offer gentle
relief with a variety of natural ingredients (along with
salicylic acid). Whether this approach is strong enough to
combat your breakouts will likely depend on your acne type.
The natural extracts are nice, but make no mistake, SA will
be doing most of the work here.
The Own Breakout
Control kit has 4 steps. While the company doesn't reveal
full ingredient lists on their website, we were able to hunt
them down. The Purifying Face Wash is the first step:
a foaming cleanser that uses salicylic acid, along with
willow herb, bitter melon and neem to soothe the skin (these
3 natural ingredients are used throughout the product line).
Next is the Calming Facial Toner - probably the
gentlest step - which reduces irritation using the same
extracts and glycerin. The Shineless Facial Lotion
packs more SA and aims to balance skin oil, while the
Fast Acne Remover is a benzoyl peroxide-free spot
treatment with a stronger dose of SA. |

Your results will hinge on how well you
respond to salicylic acid (not a solution
for deep pustules). |

Does not truly treat all causes of acne as
claimed. |

It's 4 steps multiple times per day, so your
mileage may vary. |

Who should try
Own Breakout Control
The Own
Bio-Activating Breakout Control system may be a good choice
if your skin doesn't react well to benzoyl peroxide. With
the exception of the spot treatment, there isn't much here
that should cause you irritation. The toner is non-alcoholic
and the products have a light herbal scent. Be aware that
you'll likely need to commit some time to the regimen, as
the gentle ingredients aren't going to give very fast
results. And since the main active ingredient here is SA,
Own will be most effective at dislodging acne pustules that
are near the skin's surface. If you've got surface acne,
don't mind the wait, and the time commitment of applying a
4-step product line 2-3 times per day doesn't bother you,
then Own should be worth a shot.
Who should
not
try Own Breakout Control
Own's herbal
approach and reliance on SA means that you won't see as much
relief from deep-forming pustules or cysts. And while most
of the products are fairly harmless (with low concentrations
of SA), you may want to watch out for the spot treatment if
your skin is sensitive. Even with the stronger Fast Acne
Remover, this is not a regimen to rely on if you need clear
skin fast (benzoyl peroxide treatments will still give
quicker results). The toner is also a point of slight
contention among users, as some report that it leaves your
skin with a tacky feeling. Own claims to treat all causes of
acne, but the Breakout Control system will not effect your
hormonal balance or your body's production (or metabolism)
of skin oil, so don't be fooled into thinking this is a
cure-all. Lastly, if the 4-steps sound like a hassle to you,
then you may want to skip.
Average Price
$20 per month if
you buy direct, up to $60 otherwise.
